Founded as the documentation centre of the University of Botswana, the NIR later expanded to include a research unit on the environment, education, and rural development. In 1993, a unit focusing on gender research was established (appr. 500 items). Research at the NIR is carried out by the institutes staff and researchers working on specific projects. The centre currently has 18 fulltime academic staff members, four of which are documentalists. NIR also specializes in the collection of grey material on women and development in Botswana.

The library started as part of the University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland. The gender collection is maintained by the Social Sciences Librarian. The National Institute of Research and Document (NIR), the university's documentation centre, collects grey literature on women in Botswana.
