The Appalachian Women's Alliance is a grassroots coalition of low-income and working women from six states who organized ourselves in 1993 to achieve a greater impact for Appalachian women on local, regional and national levels. Our program is one of empowerment and self-determination for women in low-income and disenfranchised Appalachian communities in West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio and North Carolina. Our priority issues are violence against women, economic justice for women and children, and dismantling racism in our communities. As we search for egalitarian solutions to systemic problems, we are creating and promoting new understandings of leadership and authority that are inclusive, non-hierarchical and actively challenge the patriarchy in which we live.
